American Studies is an interdisciplinary liberal arts program that examines the history, culture, social and economic structure, forms of cultural expression, and political and legal institutions of the United States. It integrates history, sociology, literature, and media studies and is designed to develop critical thinking, debate, and clear expository writing skills, with a focus on diversity and social inequality.
Program Overview
Professor Karl Grossman teaches class. The program combines a liberal arts education with career preparation, offering fields of study in U.S. History and Society, Media Studies, African American History and Culture, and Women’s Studies. The major provides training suitable for various careers and emphasizes taking constructive action for social change.
Evening Students
American Studies offers a limited selection of courses in the evening. Completion of a major requires daytime course attendance.
Transfer Students
The major can be completed in two years with appropriate planning. A maximum of four courses can be transferred toward the major. AS2112-AS2122, The American People I-II, are prerequisites for certain courses and should be taken in the first year.
